A good credit report is always a key component in a recipe for success. Poor credit can be a hurdle in many areas of your life. You need to view a copy of your credit report from at least one of the three credit reporting agencies each year. It is a good idea to order one credit report every four months.
Look over your credit report to ensure that there is no information on it that doesn’t ring true. It is actually quite common for inaccurate information to be listed on a credit report. Scan your credit report for any accounts or information that looks suspicious to ensure that you have not been the victim of identity theft.
You need your credit report to be able to ascertain whether you have a good or poor credit history. If you haven’t had that many credit cards or credit accounts your credit report will be fairly small. The report will help you identify the areas of your credit habits for which you need to make improvements. If you have any accounts that are past due, work to bring those accounts current immediately.
For credit cards and lines of credit that are maxed out or nearly maxed out, pay extra money to bring the balance to a more manageable amount. Avoid spending so close to your credit limit in the future. Write down the details for any accounts that are currently in collections and contact the original creditor to find out if the debt was sold to the credit agency. If it was not yet sold directly to the collection agency, work with the creditor to determine if arrangements can be made to bring your account current and to be removed from collections. If the debt was sold to a collection agency, contact that agency to determine what payment arrangements can be made.
It is important to view your credit report periodically. You can dispute any information that does not appear to be true or accurate. You will be able to evaluate your report to make certain you are not the victim of identity theft. Your credit report is also the starting point for changing your life and improving your credit.
