How to Fix Your Credit Report

by Debitor on November 17, 2008

Is your credit in bad shape? The good news is that you can effectively fix your credit report. The bad news is that this will take some time.

While there are a lot of companies out there claiming that they can fix your credit in a matter of hours, this simply isn’t true. Some legitimate companies can certainly contact your creditors, try and consolidate any debts, and help you to repay any outstanding bills. However, they cannot repair your credit quickly.
You see, it simply takes time for your credit to improve. Any credit errors will only be erased in seven years, and bankruptcy declarations will only be erased in ten years. While this news may seem rather gloomy, there is some hope. You can fix your credit on your own by following some simple rules:

  • Pay your bills on time every month.
  • Don’t skip any payments
  • If you can, pay a bit extra every month
  • Try and establish good credit by creating a proven track record

These simple tips will help you to repair your credit slowly, but surely. The best way to begin fixing your credit is to order your credit report, look it over, and then start to fix those financial holes. If you check your report each year, you will find that your score steadily increases.

Sure, a fast fix would be nice, but it just isn’t possible. Instead, try and find a way to patch up your bad credit over the next few years. It is far better to start repairing your credit now, than to wait until you need to make a large purchase.

Can you fix your credit? You bet. Can you find out what your credit score is? Sure; all you have to do is order a copy of your report. Can you fix your credit right now? No; there is no such thing as an instant credit fix. I recommend to start with a solid assestment of youf credit situation by pulling a free credit report from all 3 credit bureaus that includes your credit scores, too.
